“Oh bleddy hell, now I know why some people prefer to steal,” I grumble to meself after digging up earth and mole-ing up plants in we garden. Leg muscles scream, hands and fingers complain. Though is just seven a.m. sweat pour from me like fountain...I swear I coulda just stand there and water we Amazon-jungle garden. “Thief-man work is so much easier, all you got to do is sit in the shade and watch while other people work, then you just tiptoe in and take what you want.”
Even though I know it is true, true story that some watch while you labour in the heat, then they sneak in cool, cool and reap, somewhere at the back o’ me mind I been thinking that nobody... nooooobady... gon be that brazen enough to admit that.
Heh.
Yesterday I get straightened out on that one.
Sitting at we dining table, drinking me cuppa tea, reading the papers, I come upon a piece that make me splutter.
“Wahaha, y’all hear this, y’all hear this…” My mother is in the verandah picking chaff from masala spices, Rehana cleaning we fridge.
“A man thief three carpets from a shop and when he go to court, he holler out, Oh God, I guilty, I guilty, I is a shoplifter. And when the judge ask he why he thief, he say he got plenty chil’ren to feed and people don’t hire he because he look like a Rasta. And one time, when he been working somewhere, some people who (according to he) look like priest steal but he get accused. What a lazy bum. Why he don’t cut he hair and get work to feed he chil’ren?”
“Work, he don’t want to work,” my mother say.
Rehana say, “G, last week I read this one in the papers…a man get ketch thiefing, and when the judge ask he why he do it, he say he got plenty, plenty chil’ren to feed…and he can’t do hard work.”
Ow. I wish a bowlful o’ cherry tomatoes would just fall into me lap…which is what one thief say happen when he get ketch with a bag o’ money……

The guile of the man!!
One has to wonder how he is going to feed his children from jail. He needs to cut his hair, stop looking like a Rasta, stop with the ganja, and get his life in order.
This was the killer though:
"Magistrate Robertson then ordered him to pay a fine of $25,000. As James was escorted out of the court by a police officer he shouted, “Ow I can’t mek duh, gimme something smaller.”"
LOL! He's even tryin to rip off the judge!
i just don't get people who don't want to work. how can they expect other people to take care of them when they aren't contributing anything?!
makes me so mad here with my second job trying to pay the bills...
Cadiz, we have lots of them here, they want to reap what we sow. It's one of the reasons I don't want to advertise selling my craft, I prefer selling quietly.
Yes Mr. Nighttime, I laughed and laughed...and there's also, 'But I don’t stick up nobody with knife and thing like that.' He's a good thief!
Guile seems too a nice word for him, John G.
I've been reading your blog since the summer-oops, since July or so, and I enjoy your stories.
We have plenty of those thiefing types in Jamaica. All different types. Heard of those alternative investment schemes? I read this morning how one person who had $JA150 million (yes you read correctly) in one scheme allegedly pulled off some skullduggery to acquire a piece of real estate belonging to the owner of the investment scheme in which he had his money- apparently in exchange for his money. We say here that "when thief thief from thief God laugh".
But God must be vexxed when thief thief from hardworking people.
The Guyanese thieves have a lot of chutzpa if you ask me or as the old saying goes, they are bare face liars.
Some people's attitudes are unbelievable aren't they. It reminds me of a case I read recently about a local man who managed a small business but helped himself to the profits to pay for his mistress. They lived the high life until he got caught. He claimed he didn't think he was doing anything wrong!!! Would you believe all he gat was a two year suspended sentence but his three workmates lost their jobs because the business went bust.
Sab, that one's left me open-mouthed, he didn't think he was doing anything wrong?!?
CG, as you can see from other comments, it's not just Guyanese. Bare-faced thieves, man, they're everywhere.
Hello Jacqueline, welcome to Guyana, I'm so happy to see more Caribbean people! Oh, we have that expression too, when thief thief from thief....
Our thieves work on a different scale altogether here, they still take from the hard-working honest folk, but they call it "executive bonuses". Maybe we could ask them to pay it all back?
GG, you make me smile, you tell this story so well, (we get to the land earlier now though, that sun killing us) as for them t'ief and them, it's true they wait on the hill behind a bush 'till they see us going home, but them younger ones, they more hasty, and sneak in when we there, they pretend they is fishing in the river, but I catch them now, I ask no question, I just shoot them, with me camera. If you see them run.....
Zooms! hahahahahahahahahahaha [p.s. somebody's teaching you the local talk real good, you know it's t'ief and not thief] still laughing hahahahahahahaha..........
Mr. Farty, oho, that's what they call it, 'executive bonus'...ha, ask, go ahead, I dare you, ask 'em to pay it all back.
To the point that when one leaves her/his own home, one leaves the tv set or stereo on kind of loud so that potential thieves think there is still someone inside. I am not sure I would prefer to be there when they sneak in because I'd care for my life.
I think of Fr. Guiana as a super-high crime place, Louis...because that's where our crooks go to hide, I remember reading that somewhere. I have some ideas about what we should do to violent criminals but the human rights folks would slaughter me as I'm not human enough like the criminals.
There's no way round it: thieving is thieving.
I suspect that thieving really IS the world's oldest profession.
somewhere some wires crossed in the brain...some weird lack of empathy for others makes them number one in their own brain, and what happens to others of no consequence.
look hoo much time me rose trees dem does get tief...dem people duz pull am out root an all...
